Sports and Human Performance Nutrition

Why You Need Sports Nutrition

I have always been told “you don’t look like a runner”. Maybe it’s because I didn’t have the stick skinny body that people thought of when they think of a runner.

Soon after I started running I realized that what I ate had a correlation with how my runs went, which sparked an interest in Sports Nutrition, which led to a 30+ year career in Dietetics (but that is a story for another day).

I learned that with hard work and proper nutrition, my endurance and strength increased. I consistently set personal records and won age group awards. I achieved my goals because I understood how to fuel my body the appropriate way for training and the events I entered.

Here are just a few of the many benefits of proper nutrition and hydration before, during and after training and racing:

  • Provides your body with energy to prevent “hitting the wall”.
  • Reduces muscle soreness the next day.
  • Increases your energy levels so you aren’t feeling exhausted all the time.
  • You will sleep better.
  • Builds muscle.
  • Prevents injury.

Nutrition is amazing! As you can see, the benefits of proper nutrition aren’t limited to just the time spent running.

There is a lot that goes into planning nutrition for the long haul. Understanding the why and how around sports nutrition will keep you in the game and fuel your way to the finish.
